Varieties of Darjeeling tea

1. Black tea

The most common type of Darjeeling tea, it has a strong flavor and is fully oxidized.

2. Green tea

This tea is minimally oxidized, has a lighter color, and a milder flavor than black tea.

3. Oolong tea

This tea is partially oxidized and has a unique flavor that combines the characteristics
of both black and green teas.

4. White tea

This delicate tea has silvery, unrolled leaves and is light, sweet, and fragrant.

5. First flush

This tea is harvested in early spring and is light, flowery, and slightly astringent.

6. Second flush

This tea is harvested in late spring and has a deeper golden color and a stronger sweet
flavor.

7. Monsoon or rain tea

This tea is usually used for blending and is harvested during the rainy season.

8. Autumn flush

This tea is harvested in the fall and offers a balance between the light first flush and
the powerful second flush.

Government Initiatives

• To help the Indian exporters market teas of Indian origin in overseas markets on a sustained basis, the Tea Board of India started a scheme: Promotion for packaged Tea of Indian origin.
• The scheme provides assistance in promotional campaigns – up reimbursement, display in International Departmental Stores, product literature and website development, and inspection charges reimbursement of up to 25% of the charges.
• The Tea Board also provides subsidies to the domestic exporters to participate in International Fairs and Exhibitions.
• The aim is to provide a platform to the exporters to showcase their products in international events for promotion and facilitate the generation of trade opportunities.

Since its establishment, the Tea Board has had sole control over the growing and exporting of Darjeeling Tea and it is this which has given rise to the reputation enjoyed by Darjeeling Tea. The Tea Board has been engaged in the protection and preservation of this treasured icon of India’s cultural heritage as a Geographical Indication on a worldwide basis.
