What is coal tar?
Coal tar is a very thick, dark liquid with a number of medical and industrial uses. It is a product generated while processing coking coal into low ash metallurgical coke in a recovery type coke plant. It is one of the by-products when coal is made into coke and coal gas.
Coal tar is generally used in medicines, construction and industry. It causes side effects such as skin irritation, sun sensitivity, allergic reactions and skin discoloration.
As medicaments, it is used in shampoo, soap and ointment as a treatment for dandruff and psoriasis. In the WHO’s list of essential medicines, it is the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.
Coal tar is mainly the result of oils obtained from the distillation of high temperature coal tar and the similar products in which the weight of the aromatic constituents exceeds that of the non-aromatic constituents.
Coal tar is used as it is, after expelling the lightest phenols and aromatics or as a starting material for fractional distillations. All parts of this tar are combustible and can be used as fuel. Coal tar is used above all for making electrodes for the aluminum and steel industries. It is also used as a binder in clay-pigeons for sport shooting.
Coal tar is widely used to manufacture paints, perfumes, synthetic dyes, photographic material, drugs and explosives. It can be utilized to make insecticides and pesticides. Naphthalene balls that are commonly used to keep moths away are made from tar.
Substances like phenols, naphthalene, and cumarone are obtained at a lower cost from coal tar. Coal tar has various uses in industries as chemicals or in medical sciences or in civil engineering. Depending on its requirements coal tar can be treated differently for different purposes
